The six people – including four children and two adults – found dead inside a home in suburban Ottawa from a “mass killing” were new to Canada from Sri Lanka, police said on Thursday. The youngest victim was just two-and-a-half months old, according to authorities.
Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs said the father of the family survived and was taken to hospital to be treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries, and added that a "knife-like object" was used in the attack.
Stubbs also said that a 19-year-old suspect has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Suspect Febrio De-Zoysa was a Sri Lankan national and was in Canada as a student, according to Stubbs.

Ottawa homicide: 4 children, 2 adults found dead inside Barrhaven home
Ottawa Police Service said on Thursday that the homicide unit was called in after six people — four children and two adults — were found dead inside a home in the west-end Ottawa suburb of Barrhaven on Wednesday night.
Police said one person was taken into custody and that there is no threat to public safety, and the victims’ identities have not yet been released.
“This is a tragic and complex investigation, and investigative teams remain on Berrigan Drive,” police said, asking that anyone with information contact Ottawa police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
In a statement on X, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe called it “one of the most shocking incidents of violence in our city’s history” and said that “We are proud to live in a safe community but this news is distressing to all Ottawa ...

Ottawa police provided an update on a mass killing near Ottawa
Ottawa is reeling after police said six people, including four children, were found dead Wednesday evening in a townhouse in the south-end Barrhaven suburb.
They say a 35-year-old woman and her four children -- a seven-year-old, a four-year-old, a two-year-old and a two-month-old -- were victims of an attack that used an edged weapon.
Her husband was injured is in hospital in stable condition, and a 40-year-old man was found dead.
The family is from Sri Lanka.
A 19 year-old man is charged with 6 counts of first-degree murder. He is an international student also from Sri Lanka.

Freedom Convoy representatives Derek Noonan and Chris Dacey hold a news conference on Parliament Hill to comment on the recent Federal Court ruling on the government’s invocation of the Emergencies Act, and to discuss the future of their movement. On January 23, the Federal Court ruled that the federal government’s decision to invoke the Act in early 2022 to clear convoy protesters was unreasonable and led to an infringement of Charter rights. The group and its supporters are expected to congregate on Parliament Hill this weekend, marking two years since the first protests in 2022.
